15. Zeughausmesse, Decorative Arts Fair in Berlin

To buy your Christmas presents in the museum; this is what the Zeughausmesse Decorative Arts Berlin, is offering. As usual from 8 - 11 December 2011 the Zeughausmesse Decorative Arts Fair Berlin is due to take place in the Schlüterhof of the ’Deutsche Historische Museum’ (Unter den Linden 2, Berlin-Mitte). To the delight of aficionados of sophisticated taste 90 artists will be presenting their new objects. The fair is organised by the Berufsverband Angewandte Kunst (Professional Association for Decorative Art) Berlin-Brandenburg and is made possible thanks to the fantastic collaboration with the ’Deutsche Historische Museum’.

Decorative Art: Product Design and Arts and Craft

Design is the most prominent aspect of Decorative Art. In dealing with material and form the artist combines the joy of experimentation with professionalism. In this way down to earth objects of daily use of high aesthetic quality and high standard of craftsmanship are being created. The artists are presenting art objects such as furnishings, bags, ceramics, clothes, shoes and jewellery.

Peter Klenk constructs frames for spectacles using bold shapes and exquisite materials. Ranging from the model 'Mobile' made from buffalo horn and spring steel coming across as light and flexible to the model 'Mammut' (Mammoth) made from ancient mammoth ivory, which evokes solidity and rich imagery, the collection offers many facets of decorative spectacle. Peter Klenk’s portable brush rings also seem to be full of stories. Norwegian artist Siri Brekke’s fruit bowls are offering us optical illusions reminiscent of baroque paintings. The apples and pears are so close that you might touch them, they appear as if they had just playfully been created in a sand box; and yet they are made from ceramic and porcelain. Silke Spitzer’s necklaces contain the irrepressible power of regularly recurring themes in a continuous string formation. In her chains of tree branches she uses wood that is still strong, and by applying a few cuts gives the branches a new direction, a beginning and an end. Nature and the creative artistic process merge into a unique piece of jewellery.

"Preis für Angewandte Kunst 2011" of Berliner Volksbank

The highlight of the winter fair is the awarding of the ”Preis für Angewandte Kunst“ (Decorative Arts Award). The jury chooses three recipients from the circle of exhibitors honouring them for their outstanding achievements. The award is donated annually by the Berliner Volksbank, a major sponsor in the field of art and culture. A further sponsor of art and culture is Dussmann. From 8 December 2011 the Kulturkaufhaus (Department Store of Culture) in Friedrichstrasse 90 will be presenting the Zeughausmesse, Decorative Arts Fair in one of their shop windows.

A platform for quality led artistic encounters

The splendour and special aura of the Schlüterhof invites stimulating conversation. The Zeughausmesse provides a platform for quality led artistic encounters in the field of decorative art and form design. The fair is a showcase for tendencies and developments in Decorative Art. In close contact with the artist the buyer is able to discover a lot about the language of form, idea, manufacture and the history of the object of daily use, and is thus able to enjoy a further dimension of his or her purchased object. This way time and time again the Zeughausmesse is creating a fresh unique experience of art and shopping in a very special location.
